Summary of the Michigan State Guidelines

1. Required Screenings

  • Pre-school children: Screened at least once between ages 3โ€“5.
  • School-age children: Screened in grades 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.
  • Screening includes testing for:
    • Visual acuity
    • Eye muscle function
    • Nearsightedness
    • Farsightedness
    • Symptoms of other eyesight problems

2. Screening Referral Criteria (Criteria for Passing Vision Test)

For Pre-School (Ages 3โ€“5) and Kindergarten

  • Visual Acuity Test (LEA SYMBOLSยฎ Cards): Unable to correctly identify 4 out of 6 symbols at 20/40 with both eyes.
  • Two-Line Difference Test: Unable to read 4 out of 6 symbols at 20/25 in one eye after reading at 20/40 with both eyes.
  • Stereo Butterfly (Near Test): Unable to identify the butterfly using Polaroid lenses.

For School-Age Children (Grades 1, 3, 5, 7, 9)

  • Visual Acuity Test (LEA SYMBOLSยฎ or Snellen E):
    • LEA symbols: Unable to correctly identify 4 out of 6 symbols at 20/40 with both eyes.
    • Snellen E symbols: Unable to correctly identify 4 out of 6 symbols at 20/30 with both eyes.
  • Two-Line Difference Test: Unable to read 4 out of 6 symbols at 20/20 in one eye after achieving 20/30 with both eyes.
  • Plus Lens Test (+1.75D lens): Able to read 4 out of 6 Snellen E symbols at 20/20 with either eye while using the lens.

3. Children Who Should Bypass Screening

  • This document does not specifically list children who should bypass screening. However, standard practice typically excludes children with:
  • Diagnosed vision issues already under professional care.
  • Corrective eyewear prescriptions.
  • Recent comprehensive eye exams (e.g., within 12 months).
