In many of Houston’s neighborhoods, access to high-quality vision care has never been guaranteed. Families often face long wait times, transportation challenges, or out-of-pocket costs that put routine eye exams out of reach. At the same time, undetected vision problems quietly limit a child’s ability to learn, read confidently, or simply see the world clearly.

To help close that gap, the University of Houston College of Optometry and Good-Lite Digital have formed an evolving, informal partnership designed to support the University's longstanding community-impact initiatives. By combining the University of Houston College of Optometry's clinical expertise with Good-Lite Digital’s screening and mandate-management tools, this collaboration is creating a clearer, more connected path to care for families across the city.

A Shared Mission Rooted in Houston’s Underserved Communities

UHCO has been a powerful force for equitable care in Houston, providing millions of dollars in free and reduced-cost services each year through UH Health–Eye Care Centers. From mobile clinics to in-school screenings, UHCO’s faculty and students reach neighborhoods where routine eye care isn’t always accessible.

“What’s special about this partnership is that it reinforces our mission of delivering care directly to the communities that need it most,” said Dr. Meron Fitta, Clinical Assistant Professor at UHCO. “Good-Lite Digital gives us better tools to screen children where they are, track their needs, and help parents move from screening to a comprehensive exam with fewer delays.”

Recent UHCO Community Health initiatives—including the expansion of UHCO’s multi-site community screening program and strengthened partnerships with Houston schools, community centers, and public-health agencies—demonstrate how transformative early detection and equitable access to care can be. Across the thousands of residents screened, participants frequently report clearer and more comfortable vision, reduced day-to-day visual strain, and renewed confidence in work, school, and daily activities after receiving timely referrals and follow-up care. These efforts underscore the critical role of community-based optometry in advancing health equity, enriching student education, and ensuring that those most at risk are not left behind.

How Good-Lite Digital Is Helping the University of Houston Strengthen the “Screening-to-Care” Pipeline

While the University of Houston College of Optometry brings deep clinical and community relationships, Good-Lite Digital contributes digital tools that help streamline screenings and improve follow-through:

  • Digital vision screenings ready for high-volume school and community use
  • Secure reporting for families—available instantly, in their preferred language
  • A centralized system for tracking referrals and confirming completed exams
  • Reduced paperwork, allowing the College’s volunteers and students to focus on care
  • A reliable data trail that helps identify neighborhoods with the highest unmet need

In communities where screenings often happen without a clear next step, these tools are helping the College of Optometry “close the loop” and ensure more families actually receive the care their children need.

A Partnership Aligned With the College of Optometry's Long-Term Vision

For the College of Optometry’s leadership, the value of this collaboration extends far beyond convenience.

“Houston’s health disparities are real, and they show up early in a child’s life,” said Dr. Michael Twa, Dean at the University of Houston College of Optometry. “Our work with Good-Lite Digital strengthens our ability to deliver equitable care at scale. It helps us identify unmet needs faster and deepen our commitment to the neighborhoods we serve.”

Dr. Twa emphasized that while the partnership remains informal, it aligns with the College’s mission of expanding access, training compassionate clinicians, and leading community-driven solutions that improve public health.

Looking Ahead: More Clarity, More Access, More Impact

As the University of Houston College of Optometry expands its outreach in Houston, this collaboration with Good-Lite Digital will support:

  • More school-based screenings across underserved ZIP codes
  • Better referral coordination to affordable care
  • Stronger data to guide future community investments
  • Increased involvement from the University's students and faculty eager to serve locally

By working together, the University of Houston College of Optometry and Good-Lite Digital are helping ensure that a child’s ability to see clearly isn’t determined by their family’s ZIP code.

Vision is more than eyesight—it’s opportunity, confidence, and the foundation for a lifetime of learning. In Houston, that vision is getting a little clearer every day.
