Summary of the Virginia State Guidelines

1. Required Screenings

In the state of Virginia, vision screenings are required for early detection of visual challenges that may affect learning. The screenings are age-appropriate and include various tools.

Age Group and Tools:

  • Ages 4–5 (48–59 months): LEA SYMBOLS® or HOTV proportionally spaced charts at a 10-foot distance
  • Age 60 months and older: Sloan Letters chart at a 10-foot distance

Grade Levels for Screening:

  • Kindergarten (KG)
  • 2nd or 3rd Grade
  • 7th Grade
  • 10th Grade

Vision Conditions Assessed:

  • Visual acuity
  • Near vision (if applicable)
  • Instrument-based screening (optional for hard-to-test students)

2. Screening Referral Criteria (Criteria for Passing Vision Test)

Ages 4–5 Years (48–59 Months):

  • Pass: Visual acuity is 20/40 or better in either eye

Age 60 Months and Older:

  • Pass: Visual acuity is 20/30 (or the 20/32 line) or better in either eye

3. Children Who Should Bypass Screening

  • Children wearing corrective lenses or glasses whose vision is already managed
  • Children with known visual impairments under the care of an ophthalmologist or optometrist
  • Children with developmental, physical, or medical conditions that prevent participation in screenings

4. Required Tools OR Important Changes to Tools Used/Discontinued

Primary Screening Tools:

  • LEA SYMBOLS® or HOTV charts for younger children
  • Sloan Letters for older children

Occlusion Tools:

  • Plastic occluders
  • Frosted glasses

Instrument-Based Screening Tools:

  • Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener
  • Plusoptix S12R and S12C devices

Distance Requirements:

  • All charts must be used at a 10-foot distance

Near Visual Acuity:

  • Specific near-vision tools may be required based on grade and screening setting

GLD-Vision® Screening (Optional):

  • Automated screening of visual acuity, depth perception, and color vision
  • Reduces memorization risks
  • Requires minimal training and provides accurate digital reporting
