Summary of the Pennsylvania State Guidelines

1. Required Screenings

In the state of Pennsylvania, annual vision screenings are mandated for students to ensure early identification of visual impairments that could impact learning and development.

Far Visual Acuity Test

  • Tests for: Amblyopia, Astigmatism, Myopia
  • Grade Levels: All students yearly

Near Visual Acuity Test

  • Tests for: Astigmatism, Focusing Problems, Hyperopia
  • Grade Levels: All students yearly

Convex Lens Test (Plus Lens)

  • Tests for: Excessive Hyperopia
  • Grade Levels: 1st-grade students meeting specific criteria and new students not previously screened

Color Vision Test

  • Tests for: Color Discrimination
  • Grade Levels: 1st or 2nd grade and new students not previously screened

Stereo/Depth Perception Test

  • Tests for: Binocularity, Strabismus
  • Grade Levels: 1st or 2nd grade and new students not previously screened

2. Screening Referral Criteria (Criteria for Passing Vision Test)

Kindergarten and Grade 1

  • Referral if: Visual acuity in either eye is less than 20/40
  • Two-line difference between the eyes (e.g., 20/25 and 20/40)

Grade 2 and Above

  • Referral if: Visual acuity in either eye is less than 20/30
  • Two-line difference between the eyes

Re-Testing Requirement

  • If the initial screening results in failure, re-testing must be done. If the results remain the same, a referral is issued.

3. Children Who Should Bypass Screening

  • Documented diagnosed visual impairments
  • Students with prescription glasses or contact lenses and current vision records
  • Students with a comprehensive eye examination within the past year
