In the state of Texas, vision screenings are required at multiple educational entry points and for specific grade levels to identify early vision issues in school-aged children.
- Children aged 4 years by September 1
- Kindergarten students

First-time school entrants: Any student entering school for the first time (PreK–12)
- Students in grades 1, 3, 5, and 7
When Screenings Must Be Conducted

First-time entrants: Within 120 days of school admission

Designated grade levels: Screenings should take place during the school year, preferably in the first semester
Children with results that fall outside acceptable standards must be referred for further evaluation.
Typical Standards for Passing:

Younger children: Visual acuity of 20/30 or better
