Summary of the Utah State Guidelines
1. Required Screenings
In the state of Utah, vision screening is required at specific educational milestones to monitor children's visual health.
Distance Visual Acuity:
- Required for: Pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades 1, 3, 5, 7/8, and 9/10
- Methods: Screen using age-appropriate charts or digital instruments
GLD-Vision® Assessments (alternative to traditional):
- Visual acuity
- Depth perception (stereopsis)
- Color vision deficiency
2. Screening Referral Criteria (Criteria for Passing Vision Test)
Utah Guidelines Referral Thresholds:
- Age 3: Fails majority of 20/50 line optotypes
- Ages 4–5: Fails majority of 20/40 line optotypes
- Grades 1 and above: Fails majority of 20/32 line optotypes
GLD-Vision® Referral:
- Automatically identifies issues across acuity, stereopsis, and color vision based on embedded thresholds
3. Children Who Should Bypass Screening
- Children under professional vision care, such as those with diagnosed impairments or in regular follow-up with an eye specialist
- GLD-Vision® platform: May exclude children already flagged within the school database
4. Required Tools OR Important Changes to Tools Used/Discontinued
Utah Tools for Distance Screening:
- Approved charts: LEA SYMBOLS®, Sloan Letters, HOTV proportionally spaced charts
- Occluders: Plastic eye occluders, pinhole glasses
- Instrument-based screeners: Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener, Plusoptix devices (primarily for ages 3–5)
GLD-Vision® Tools/Innovations:
- Digital Vision Screening Software: Web-based, interactive system requiring no manual installation
- Training: Minimal to none required
- Testing features: Digital matching exercises for acuity, stereopsis, and color deficiency
- Key benefit: Eliminates need for manual charts or manual data entry
