Summary of the New Mexico State Guidelines

1. Required Screenings

The state of New Mexico mandates vision screenings across specific age groups to support early detection and intervention of vision problems in children.

  • Distance Visual Acuity:
    • Ages 3–5: Passing is 20/40. Refer if either eye tests 20/50 or worse, or there is a one-line difference between eyes.
    • Ages 6 and older: Passing is 20/30. Refer if either eye tests 20/40 or worse, or there is a one-line difference between eyes.
  • Ocular Alignment: Performed once within target grades. Passing requires successful identification of the test object. Referral is made upon failure.
  • Color Vision: Required once in target grades. If a child fails, parents are notified. Referral is optional.
  • Instrument-Based Screening (Photoscreening): Used in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First Grade.
