The state of New Mexico mandates vision screenings across specific age groups to support early detection and intervention of vision problems in children.

Distance Visual Acuity:

Ages 3–5: Passing is 20/40. Refer if either eye tests 20/50 or worse, or there is a one-line difference between eyes.

Ages 6 and older: Passing is 20/30. Refer if either eye tests 20/40 or worse, or there is a one-line difference between eyes.

Ocular Alignment: Performed once within target grades. Passing requires successful identification of the test object. Referral is made upon failure.

Color Vision: Required once in target grades. If a child fails, parents are notified. Referral is optional.

Instrument-Based Screening (Photoscreening): Used in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and First Grade.
