In the state of South Dakota, vision screenings are conducted using both traditional optotype-based and modern instrument-based methods to accommodate children across various age groups.
Distance Visual Acuity:

Ages 3–5: Use LEA SYMBOLS® or HOTV letters

Tools: Flip charts used at 5 or 10 feet

Ages 6 and up: Use Sloan Letters or LEA Numbers® with 10-foot standardized charts
Near Vision Screening:

Ages 3–5: LEA SYMBOLS® or HOTV charts

Ages 6+: Sloan Letters or LEA Numbers® with 16-inch measuring cord
Instrument-Based Screening:

Recommended for: Ages 1–2 or children who cannot complete optotype-based tests
