Summary of the West Virginia State Guidelines
1. Required Screenings
In the state of West Virginia, vision screenings are a critical part of student health monitoring, with priority given to key age groups and high-risk students.
- All first-time school enterers
- Children aged 11–13 years
- Priority screenings: For students referred by teachers, parents, or self-referred

High-risk groups:
- Special education students
- Students repeating a grade
- Students who previously failed a screening without follow-up
- Additional screenings: Color vision or near vision if concerns are raised
- Optional: Screening additional grades if resources and time allow
2. Screening Referral Criteria (Criteria for Passing Vision Test)
- Age 3: Refer if 20/50 or worse in either eye
- Age 4: Refer if 20/40 or worse in either eye
- Age 5 and older: Refer if 20/30 or worse in either eye
- Any age: Refer if there is a two-line or greater difference between eyes
3. Children Who Should Bypass Screening
- Students with known vision impairments that are already diagnosed and managed
- Students currently under eye care from an optometrist or ophthalmologist
