In the state of Virginia, vision screenings are required for early detection of visual challenges that may affect learning. The screenings are age-appropriate and include various tools.
Age Group and Tools:

Ages 4–5 (48–59 months): LEA SYMBOLS® or HOTV proportionally spaced charts at a 10-foot distance

Age 60 months and older: Sloan Letters chart at a 10-foot distance
Grade Levels for Screening:
- Kindergarten (KG)
- 2nd or 3rd Grade
- 7th Grade
- 10th Grade
Vision Conditions Assessed:
- Visual acuity

Instrument-based screening (optional for hard-to-test students)
