Annual screenings mandated for students in kindergarten, grades 1, and 3-5. Additional screenings during health assessments in grades 6/7 and 9/10.
GLD-Vision® system: Suitable for all grades, it offers screening for visual acuity, depth perception, and color vision in 2.5 minutes without specialized personnel.
2. Screening Referral Criteria (Criteria for Passing Vision Test)
Pass Criteria for Traditional Screening:
Prekindergarten (48-59 months): 20/40 vision in each eye.
Kindergarten and above (5+ years): 20/30 vision in each eye.
Referral required if there's a two-line difference in acuity between eyes, even if the child passes the threshold (e.g., 20/20 in one eye, 20/40 in the other).
GLD-Vision® Criteria:
Automatically determines criteria based on age, covering acuity, stereopsis, and color vision.
3. Children Who Should Bypass Screening
Bypass Criteria:
Students with known diagnosed visual impairments or those under ongoing treatment for vision should not be screened and should instead have medical follow-up documented.
Exemptions permitted if parents provide documentation of recent eye exams by a healthcare provider, or if they object on religious grounds.
4. Required Tools OR Important Changes to Tools Used/Discontinued
Traditional Tools:
Use of Snellen or SLOAN Letter Charts for visual acuity, with HOTV or LEA symbols for younger children (preschool age).
Other recommended tools include occluders, tape measures, and distance markings. The "E" chart is discouraged due to cognitive demands it places on children.
GLD-Vision® Tools:
Requires only a digital device with internet access; the system is web-based, HIPAA and FERPA compliant, and adjusts itself to avoid memorization by the child.
Streamlines the process by eliminating the need for manual data entry and paper forms, allowing instant, online access to results.
